SMOOTH-SIDED TOAD

(Bufo guttatus)

There is one male smooth-sided toad in the Zoo's Main Building. He was born in 2006 and arrived at the Zoo in 2008.

HABITAT

Rainforests of Northern South America. They are nearly always associated with granite or sandstone rocks.

DIET

Insects and other invertebrates. As they grow in size, they will eat small vertebrates such as rodents and snakes.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Smooth-sided toads may reach 9 inches in length.
  • The parotid glands of these toads produce toxins that interfere with a predator's heart function and can cause death due to heart failure.
